Habitat Structure of Bald Eagle Nest Sites and Management Zones near Juneau, Alaska

چکیده
As urban and wild lands come into increasingly closer contact and as demands on wildlife and other natural resources increase, effective and sound ecological management of these resources becomes more critical. This is particularly true in Southeast Alaska where timber harvesting and coastal development continue to threaten Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) populations. No longer can we simply rely upon the vast acreage of Alaska to ensure minimal impacts on North America's largest population of Bald Eagles (King et al. 1972, Hodges et al. 1979). Current minimal standards and guidelines may protect against direct human disturbances to nesting Bald Eagles, but these measures may be insufficient to maintain a healthy landscape, which is necessary for ensuring the existence of future populations (Connor 1979, Sidle et al. 1990). Thus, sound management solutions are currently needed for maintaining eagle populations in Southeast Alaska.

Regulation of Bald Eagle Reproductive Rates in Southeast Alaska
I examined the influence of food abundance and habitat quality on reproduction of Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) in the Chilkat Valley, Alaska. The proportion of active nests was greatest and the timing of laying earliest in portions of the study area where food was most abundant. Clutch size was not related to food availability. Offspring survival was higher in breeding areas where foo...
متن کاملAssessing Human Disturbance of Breeding Bald Eagles with Classification Tree Models
We recorded 4,188 events of human activity and associated bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) response in the vicinity of 13 central Arizona nest sites during 1983-85. A hierarchical classification of 9 dependent and 3 independent parameters was developed to quantify pedestrian, aquatic, vehicle, noise (gunshot/sonic boom), and aircraft disturbance groups. Type and frequency of response varie...
متن کاملTo migrate, stay put, or wander? Varied movement strategies in bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)
BACKGROUND Quantifying individual variability in movement behavior is critical to understanding population-level patterns in animals. Here, we explore intraspecific variation in movement strategies of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) in the north Pacific, where there is high spatiotemporal resource variability. We tracked 28 bald eagles (five immature, 23 adult) using GPS transmitters bet...
متن کاملDistribution and Population Status of Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) in Interior Alaska
We summarize information available on natural history, numbers, distribution, and status of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) in six regions of interior Alaska: Upper Yukon, Lower Yukon, Tanana, Kuskokwim, Susitna, and Upper Copper. We identified 347 nesting territories using information from local researchers, a raptor nest atlas, unpublished raptor survey reports, and our own surveys. Ne...
متن کاملA Review of the Natural History of a Reestablished Population of Breeding Bald Eagles in New York
Despite the bounty resulting in the removal of more than 100,000 Bald Eagles from the Alaskan population during the first half of the twentieth century, Bald Eagles can be considered secure and even at saturation levels in Alaska. This is undoubtedly due to the maintenance of undisturbed, suitable habitat and an abundant food supply. Similarly, much of Canada boasts abundant Bald Eagle populati...
